A man adorned with a variety of tattoos, including images of Lenin and Stalin, and the words Dum Spiro Spero [As long as I breathe, I hope] cools off in fountains next to the Kremlin and Red Square during a prolonged heatwave that has seen temperatures of over 37C, a record for the city. Such tattoos are common amongst Russian prison inmates, and contain a system of codes denoting the owner’s status and history within the country’s criminal system.
